Service Learning Trip FAQ
Welcome to the McMaster MEDLIFE Service Learning Trip (SLT) FAQ page! Our SLT program offers students the chance to make a meaningful impact in underserved communities while learning from local professionals. To further support participants, we have introduced an SLT Mentorship Program. This FAQ addresses common questions about SLTs, trip logistics, costs, safety, and how our mentorship program can help you feel more informed and prepared for the experience.

What makes an SLT unique?
An SLT combines direct service with immersive learning. Participants work on real projects that support local community needs, while learning from the experts in the field. Reflection sessions, cultural immersion, and mentorship make this experience more than just volunteering—it’s a chance to grow personally and academically.
Where will McMaster MEDLIFE be going this year and when?
This year, McMaster MEDLIFE will be traveling to Tamarindo Costa Rica, from April 26-May 4. Each trip focuses on different projects based on the specific needs of the community at that time, whether it’s healthcare clinics, educational outreach, or infrastructure support.
What is a Service Learning Trip (SLT)?
A Service Learning Trip (SLT) is a hands-on experience where students travel to underserved communities to work alongside local professionals in healthcare, education, and development projects. Participants contribute to sustainable initiatives while learning about global health, development, and social justice issues.
What will I be doing on an SLT?
On an SLT, participants may engage in:
Mobile Medical Clinics: Assisting local health professionals with medical care and public health education.
Educational Initiatives: Supporting local schools through teaching and organizing community workshops.
Development Projects: Helping with construction or infrastructure improvements, such as building clean water systems or schools.
What are some of the trip logistics?
Travel: Participants are responsible for booking their own flights, but local transportation during the trip will be organized by McMaster MEDLIFE.
Accommodation: You’ll stay in hotels arranged by McMaster MEDLIFE, which will be safe, clean, and shared with fellow volunteers.
Meals: Meals are provided, and dietary preferences can be accommodated.
What are safety logistics?
MEDLIFE takes safety seriously and implements the following measures:
Local Support: On-site MEDLIFE staff will be available throughout the trip to provide assistance and manage emergencies.
Medical Care: You’ll have access to healthcare support, and we recommend getting all necessary vaccinations prior to departure.
Risk Management: We assess each destination for potential risks and provide participants with safety training during orientation.
What is the SLT Mentorship Program?
The SLT Mentorship Program pairs first-time SLT participants (mentees) with experienced participants (mentors). Mentors provide guidance on everything from preparing for the trip to understanding the cultural context and managing trip logistics. The goal is to help new participants feel confident and supported throughout the entire process.
How can I sign up for an SLT Mentorship Program?
Mentors: To be a mentor, you must have participated in at least one SLT and be willing to share your experiences and advice with new participants.
Mentees: If this is your first SLT and you’d like additional guidance, you can sign up to be paired with a mentor. The program is open to anyone interested in gaining more information and support before the trip.
What are the benefits of joining the SLT Mentorship Program?
Personalized Guidance: As a mentee, you’ll receive tailored advice from someone who has already experienced an SLT.
Community Building: Mentors and mentees form connections that foster a sense of community even before the trip starts.
Practical Advice: Learn firsthand about what to pack, how to prepare, and what to expect, so you can make the most of your SLT experience.
How do I prepare for an SLT?
Preparation involves several steps:
Attend Orientation: Before your trip, McMaster MEDLIFE will host sessions to discuss trip logistics, safety, and cultural expectations.
Pack Accordingly: A packing list will be provided, covering essentials like appropriate clothing, hygiene items, and travel documents.
How can I get involved with SLT fundraising?
Fundraising is a great way to help offset the cost of your SLT. McMaster MEDLIFE offers fundraising initiatives that you can join, or you can start your own campaign. We’ll provide guidance and resources to help you reach your fundraising goals. Contact our fundraising team to learn more about available options.
Who can I contact if I have more questions?
